Updating an alter table command

I am using SQL Server 2005, which I just started using last week, with no formal training.  I do have some experience with SQL Server 2000, however.  I was named as the backup to the SQL Server DBA who just went on vacation.  We just completed our migration from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005.  The DBA migrated all the old DTS packages onto 2005 and they have not yet been migrated to SSIS.  A user called me and told me that one of the tables they use had date fields that contain the date "1900-01-01 00:00:00:000", yet they are expecting ( and have seen in the past ) the word "Null".  I found the DTS package that loads this table and the date columns are originally set to "Char" in the "Create Table" portion of the DTS package ( this is the first step and an execute SQL task.  The next step of the DTS package loads the input data file to the table we just created.  The last step is an "Alter table" ( another execute SQL task ).  In it, each date column, first set up at "char" is altered to "datetime" format.  This works fine when there is actual data in the column ( which is most of the time ).  When that record is blank, I believe the default date is put in the column.  I believe I want to alter the particular date column to datetime format but only if there is data in that record.  The fields seem to be blank and not null.  I am not certain how to accomplish this.  T
